Now, data science is a BIG field, and the job itself is still not clearly defined. Data scientists at different companies often have slightly different roles, so the maths required for each position will ultimately vary.

However, there are some fundamental topics, in my opinion, all data scientists should know and will likely cover the majority of requirements in job descriptions and questions you may get asked in interviews.

It is important to mention that these are more for the entry and junior level, not for those wanting to be a machine learning researcher at OpenAI, Microsoft, or Tesla. That’s a different kettle of fish, which I have no experience speaking on, and revolves around going down the research rather than the industry route.

In general, there are three categories in maths you should study:

  • Probability & Statistics
  • Calculus
  • Linear Algebra
