  • Mastercard completed its $1.8 billion acquisition of stablecoin firm BVNK on August 3.
  • The deal values BVNK at $1.5 billion plus up to $300 million in earnouts.
  • The move intensifies stablecoin competition among Stripe, Visa, and PayPal.

Mastercard has completed its acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure provider BVNK on August 3, 2026, marking one of the payments giant’s biggest moves yet to position itself in the rapidly evolving world of digital currencies.

The transaction values BVNK at $1.5 billion, with an additional $300 million in potential earnout payments tied to performance targets. The acquisition gives Mastercard direct ownership of technology designed to help businesses and financial institutions hold, move and manage money across traditional currencies and stablecoins.

The deal reflects a broader shift among major financial companies as stablecoins move from a niche cryptocurrency product toward a potential component of global payments infrastructure.

Mastercard Moves Ahead of Schedule in Stablecoin Push

Mastercard announced the BVNK acquisition in March 2026 and completed the deal months ahead of its original year-end timeline after receiving regulatory approval.

Founded in London in 2021, BVNK provides infrastructure for businesses and financial institutions to move between traditional currencies and stablecoins.

Before the acquisition, the company had raised more than $90 million and reported annualized payment volume of $30 billion, up from $20 billion in late 2025. BVNK said existing customers would keep their products, integrations and support teams after the deal.

Payments Giants Take Different Paths Into Stablecoins

Mastercard’s move comes as rival payments companies pursue different strategies for entering the stablecoin market.

Stripe acquired stablecoin infrastructure company Bridge for $1.1 billion in 2025, becoming one of the first major payments companies to make a large acquisition in the sector.

Visa has taken a partnership-driven approach, developing stablecoin settlement initiatives and tools for managing stablecoin transactions rather than acquiring a dedicated infrastructure provider.

PayPal has also expanded its PYUSD stablecoin to 70 markets, highlighting how traditional payments companies are increasingly competing in blockchain-based finance.

The acquisition also follows earlier interest from other potential buyers. Coinbase reportedly explored acquiring BVNK at a valuation of around $2 billion before discussions ended during due diligence in late 2025. Mastercard also previously considered acquiring stablecoin infrastructure company Zerohash, but that transaction did not move forward.

Stablecoin Infrastructure Becomes the Next Payments Battleground

Mastercard’s acquisition comes during a period of rising investment in stablecoin-related businesses.

According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, at least 14 stablecoin-focused transactions were announced in 2025, reflecting growing interest in the sector before the BVNK deal closed.

Within Mastercard’s acquisition history, the BVNK transaction ranks among the company’s largest deals of the decade, behind acquisitions including the $3.19 billion purchase of Nets and the $2.65 billion acquisition of Recorded Future.

Why This Matters

The acquisition gives Mastercard a stronger position in the emerging stablecoin economy, but the company’s next challenge will be turning BVNK’s technology into products that can compete with both traditional payment networks and crypto-native platforms.
